The West Coast Renegades are pleased to announce the addition of Tate Maris as the organization’s new goaltending coach as of November 1. Tate replaces Mark Sample who has been with WCR since the organization’s inception in 2014. The West Coast Renegades would like to thank Mark Sample for his commitment to the the organization and our goaltenders for the past three seasons, and wish him nothing but the best in the future.
Maris was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and played most of his youth career throughout the Denver-metro area and Colorado Springs. Tate joined the Kent Denver Sun Devils in his sophomore year of high school, earning the CHSAA Rookie of the Year as a sophomore, and All-Colorado honors in his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. Following high school, Tate moved on to play for the Bozeman Ice Dogs of the NPHL, posting a .918 save percentage in 23 games. In the fall of 2008, he enrolled at the University of North Dakota, eventually walking on to the Fighting Sioux Men’s Ice Hockey Team in 2009. During Tate’s four seasons, the Sioux would go on to win three Broadmoor Trophies and a McNaughton Cup championship.
Tate was also named to the WCHA All-Academic team in each of his four years at UND. Upon graduating with a degree in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administration, Tate returned to Colorado to play professionally in the CHL and ECHL with the Colorado Eagles, before retiring in 2016.
Tate has been coaching goaltenders for over 10 years. He was a main instructor at JPL Goaltending and the REA Hockey Academy during his years in North Dakota. In addition to his role with WCR, Tate works as a goalie consultant privately with Mountain High Hockey, and also as a goalie coach with the Colorado College Tigers mens NCAA division 1 team.
